To Make a Resolution or Not??

I hope you had time to enjoy your families over the holidays!

How’d everything go for you?  I know some of you did really well and had great strategies in place.  Others struggled a bit.  Even with the best of intentions, sometimes things just don’t go as planned.  As the new year approaches it’s common to want to ‘buckle down’ and swing into hyper perfectionist/controlling mode.  We often feel a little gross from too much sugar and not enough exercise and sleep.   And the New Year’s Resolution was born-

“I’m never eating sugar again”
“I’m never drinking alcohol again”
“I’m going to exercise EVERY day in 2017”
etc, etc, etc

Often times we create this imaginative versions of ourselves that is always full of energy, motivated, and has no struggles when we set out to make our resolutions.  That’s why this year I challenge you to do something a little different.  Rather than come up with a resolution, what if you came up with a mantra?  Something that allows the flexibility of life to happen, but also gives the year a focus and direction towards the person you want to be.

Here’s mine:

2017 I will live intentionally through my values and priorities

For each value, I have some action steps that are flexible, but keep my intentions at the forefront of my mind-

I will be present and mindful in connecting with my family and friends.  That means technology-free time, playdates, and date nights!

I will take care of myself and my health.  Just re-visited the ‘kitchen makeover’ and had an entire garbage bag to throw out!  I also scheduled a massage, a gift certificate that I’ve had for way too long!

I will be an active member contributing to my community.  As we’re cleaning out our home, making room for baby #3, we looked into the local charities to donate the things we don’t need.

Above my desk is sign that reads

Live Intentionally- Myself, My Family, My Friends, My Community

This is a reminder to myself to present in all my relationships, because in the end, that’s really what is important to me.  I keep it posted in a place I will see every day.

I would love to hear what your 2017 mantra is and what it means to you.

Have a beautiful New Year, I hope it’s the best one yet!
